SRI PADHAYA - ADAM'S PEAK
Description
Adam’s peak is also known as the sri padaya, Samanalakanda , Samangira & samanalagira.It is a rocky Summit resembles a huge footprint which has been venerated as a sacred sign from remote antiquity. It is a 2243m (7359ft) tall mountain. It takes several hours to get to the top and pilgrims can rest, cook, bathe (river that separate the peak from other mountains )and spend a night . The great desire of every pilgrims to see the dance of rising sun. It is surrounded with hull, wildness sanctuary & together with Horton plain national park & knuckles range
History said that the mountain was the landmark of the ancient seafaring Arabs who came to Sri Lanka for trade purpose .It is revered as a Holy site by Buddhist. Buddhist believes that the footmark on the summit of sri padaya is that of Buddha during third visit to kelaniya 2880 years ago. Christian believes it is the footprint of Adam the first parent on the human race, and Hindus as that of Shiva.
The pilgrimage usually takes place from December to April which is a dry Season.
