Horton plains is a vast protected area and coldesr , windiest location in the country. It consist of ecosystem such as montane evergreen forests, grasslands .marshy lands many species rich in biodiversity. Horton plains spread across over 3169 hectares and was declared a UNESCO World heritage site on 30th July 2010.
HISTORY
It was discovered by the planter Thomas farr in the early 19th century and was named Horton plains after British governor Sir Robert Horton is a world apart from rest of the tropical island.
ATTRACTION
All the montane endemics are found in Horton plains and also an important bird area with many species. Also it’s exhibits interest displays on the history of flora and fauna. The montane forest also the source of three major rivers Mahaweli River, Walawe and river Kelani. World’s End Bakers falls is one of the highlights of the Horton plains and world’s end is and escarpment that fall sheer 900 meters.
