SAMADHI BUDDHA STATUE

Description

This Buddha image built within a Bodhi Tree Shrine is supposed to be the most exquisite Buddha image found in Sri Lanka. It is sculptured in Gupta style and belongs to the period between 5-6 centuries A.D. probably this image may have been gilt and studded with jewels. The image is in Samadhi posture and seated on Virasana.

There is Evidence to the effect that this Bodhi-Tree shrine had four Buddha images on the four sides. The square pit where the Bodhi-Tree was planted has also been discovered, The original Bodhi-Tree is not been in existence now. This Bodhi-Tree shrine is one of the four ancient Bodhi-Tree shrines in Abhayagiriya.

It’s located in Anuradhapura ancient city. 200Km away from Colombo
