Sri Lanka is a beautiful island situated in the Indian ocean which is a renowned travel destination. It is mainly because of the diversity in both the natural environment and the diversity of the culture that attracts tourists to this little island. It is an island rich with culture and history where its documented history runs back to 3000 years and also there are pieces of evidence that prove pre-historic human settlement in some areas of Sri Lanka. And as for the cultural aspect of Sri Lanka: It is strongly influenced by Theravada Buddhism. It was under the rule of British Colonial Rule which owned the name of Ceylon at that period of time. And due to its prominence of many natural resources, it was also named as the Pearl of the Indian ocean. During the early 20th century Sri Lanka obtained the political independence in 1948 and it adopted the name, Sri Lanka.

History of Sri Lanka

The history of Sri Lanka runs back towards thousands and thousands of time. It was so vast that we still couldn’t measure it exactly. Balangoda Man, one of the earliest human archaeological relics found in Sri Lanka. This great history was extracted from the three main documented chronicle such as Mahavamsa, Dipavamsa and Chulavamsa. According to these chronicles, the first king of the Anuradhapura kingdom is King Pandukabhaya. With the arrival of Arhath Mahinda, Buddhism was introduced to the country. The country was divided into several kingdoms and was ruled until it was invaded by Portuguese, Dutch and British subsequently. Portuguese ruled from 1597 to 1658 and afterwards dutch began to rule the country roughly until 1796, And then came the British and invaded the country in 1815.  After so many Rebellions waged against these invaders, Sri Lanka achieved independence from the British in 1948.

Sri Lanka consists of a tropical and warm climate in most places during the year. The temperature is slightly affected by the ocean winds. The pattern of the rainfall is highly influenced by the monsoon winds. In some parts of the central high lands, frost may occur during the winter season. But most of the time the weather is warm and cosy making it felicitous for tourism.

Sri Lanka is a country which is considered as a unitary state and a democratic republic. Its Government system follows a semi-presidential system along with the presidential and parliamentary system. Two-thirds majority approval is needed for most of the constitutional amendments and decisions to be set into action. But for the amendments of some basic features requires both two-third majority and the approval of the nationwide referendum. Just as in most democratic countries Sri Lanka also included three main branches of the government such as Executive, Legislative and Judicial.

Sri Lanka consists of a widespread network of inland roads for transportation. E grade highways are newly added to the road system in recent years. These roads have controlled access and provide the facility to speed up to 100 KMPH. It provides convenience to by-pass busy and congested roads. Using this road saves time. Other than that, there are A and B grade roads C and D grade which comes under Road Development Authority Provincial Road Development Authority respectively.

 In addition to that, transportation can be done through trains. There are railroads for some main cities of the country. The railroad network lies along the most beautiful sceneries in main lines, coastal lines and up-country lines. Moreover, air and water-based transportation can be seen in some parts of the country as well.

Best season to visit Sri Lanka

Time of your visit may vary according to the places you are planning to visit in Sri Lanka. In other words, if you are planning to visit the west and South coast and hill country, December to march can be recommended. And if you are heading towards the east coast you will get the best weather during the month of April or May to September. If you visit these places during these time periods it will enhance your experience in Your visit to Sri Lanka
